Black Diamond Landscapes Inc. delegates all of its resources to fall cleanup and leaf removal from October through December. We have the resources and equipment to provide fast and reliable service to clean your yard or business property of all leaves once, twice or even on some properties, three times every fall. Similar to the spring, cleaning up in the fall is crucial to preventing certain diseases and molds from growing in your lawn and planting beds during the winter. While this preventive maintenance is important to the year ’round health of your yard, removing all those leaves from your yard also improves the appearance of your property for the rest of the season.

Lime and Fertilizer

Black Diamond Landscapes, Inc. recognizes that landscaping is bringing part of nature back to the rigid and unnatural aspects of buildings and houses, and therefore promotes using organic and natural materials throughout the landscaping process. However, in certain instances a boost of fertilizer or weed and pest control is recommended.

Black Diamond Landscapes, Inc. recommends that all lawns be limed in the fall during the aeration process to promote soil neutrality, and in turn, enhancing growing conditions for a more healthy lawn. Throughout New England this process is almost always required because of the high acidity in our native soils, thus the amount of lime required per lawn is dependent upon the overall health of the lawn that is being treated.

Most lawns need to be treated throughout the year with slow release fertilizers, pest and herbicides to keep the lawn healthy and looking great. Black Diamond Landscapes, Inc. only treats lawns with fertilizers and refers pest and weed controls to our lawn treatment and tree company. As many people are not aware, companies must have certain licensing, certifications and insurances to use pesticides and herbicides in the state of Massachusetts. This is why we allocate all of lawn treatment programs through Savatree/Savalawn out of Lincoln. This company has years of experience in both of these fields.

When choosing the best method of treatment for your lawn Black Diamond Landscapes, Inc. and Savatree/Savalawn will provide you with best course of action to help treat a problem on your lawn or bring maximize the health and vitality of your lawn.

Aeration and Slice Seeding

Several routine maintenance services that add to the complete landscape include aeration, slice-seeding and overseeding. On some properties one or more of these services is required to help achieve a great lawn.

Aeration is usually a process performed annually in early fall.  A machine is used on the lawn that pulls 2-3 inch deep plugs of soil out of your lawn and leaves the plugs on the surface of the lawn to dissolve. The purpose of doing this is to allow better air circulation and moisture deeper into the root zone. By depositing pieces of soil on the surface of the lawn it acts to breakdown any thatch that has built up on the lawn throughout the summer. Finally, some lawns have soils that may consist largely of clay or be highly compacted in general. Aeration acts to loosen up the soil and lower the density of the soil, allowing grass roots to grow more easily.

Sliceseeding is alternative to a completely new lawn in cases where the soil of your lawn might be fertile and fresh but a thick, green and lush lawn is not growing. Generally the lawn is thin and scarce or an incorrect seed variety was chosen initially and a poor lawn resulted. Sliceseeding uses a machine that slices the top inch of soil on your lawn and deposits grass seed in these slices. The results are beautiful green and thick grass in just a few weeks. This technique provides a more economical alternative for renovating an existing lawn, instead of installing a new one.

Overseeding is another form of lawn renovation.  It is usually performed during the aerating process in the fall. After aerating, seed is broadcast spread over the lawn and places itself in the voids of the plugs from the aeration. The result is new lawn growth and added thickness to the turf areas of your landscape.

This time of year the days are hot and dry and your landscape requires little maintenance other than weekly lawn mowing, but your shrubs and bushes are also done with their growing season and it’s time for a pruning.
